Fart cans sound good god damn it!
Almost makes me wish I had kept the N1. Although, the car would have been ungodly loud.

4th was my favorite with the 5th one being the runner up. Not bad, but not my preferred sound either.

*Fart cans can sound good on cars that already sound good.
For example, slapping a big fat exhaust on a 13b RX7 sounds glorious. Do the same to that Nissan Versa like that douche here at Purdue has done and it sounds laughably bad.

Sir, we are all given opinions. Mine is, that would have sounded great to me, a few years ago when I had n H24A2. Now it seems more show than go, and that is what I find a little silly. To be fair, the first supra.. ngggg
![]() 03/10/2014 at 21:52 |

Holy shit you have heard that one!?! It is so obnoxious! If he wanted to make it a little louder that would have been fine but he has crossed a line, and it doesn't even sound good.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 21:52 |

If they sounded good they wouldn't be called fart cans.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 21:52 |

Well to be fair, straight pipes are the way to go.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 21:53 |

Agreed. It all depends on the car.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 21:53 |

it's only truly a fart can if it's attached to an otherwise stock non-turbo mid 90's econobox.

There are a few here at my school, good God are they loud though!
![]() 03/10/2014 at 21:55 |

I think my farts sound good. . .
![]() 03/10/2014 at 21:56 |

What is this H24A2? To be fair, most catbacks are more for noise than actual performance.

This is all I hear

Who needs pipes when you could have open headers?
![]() 03/10/2014 at 21:58 |

I struggle to call all of these fartcans, as the cars seem to have been heavily upgraded.
Sidenote: So proud to have identified the LS1 in the 240 as an LS1 by idle.

Yep, he drives by my apartment at least once a night delivering Domino's or whatever. I honestly have no clue what he was going for with that one, unless he wanted the closest exhaust note to an actual human fart as possible.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:01 |

It still has the canister design, which is what I always call a fart can.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:03 |

Maybe he likes being obnoxious. I personally don't. As of right now, I feel like while accelerating around town my car needs to be a bit quieter. It is too noticeable!
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:06 |

I have notified the authorities. They are coming to investigate this. Jeez. YSI, what has come over you? Yeah, yeah, I know, they sound different on a true performance tuned motor, under full throttle. But that is not how we hear them every day. A stock Honda Civic usually and it sounds like crap. Oh, and don't forget the add-on body panels that have never been painted to match the rest of the car.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:06 |

Not hating, love me some n1. Although I'm personally going for the straight pipe on my car though.

is Perdue in rochester? Because if so I know the owner i think.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:07 |

Hell yeah. Got my 2003 Cavalier Fart Cannon ready to terrorize tourists all summer.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:07 |

All hail the open headers!

Some kid had the audacity to put a n1 on a versa? Why do I hear so much crazy things about Purdue?
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:09 |

On a proper car, yes.
Unfortunately people put them on not proper cars, and all you get is raspy buzzy annoyance.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:11 |

The videos you've posted don't seem too bad, especially compared to some of the other tuned cars around here (that red SS Cobalt especially). They actually sound really good! At normal speeds you can't even really get going fast enough to really wind it up anyways, so if you shift normally it shouldn't be a problem. But I'm with you, I keep my revs super-low around campus so I don't feel like a tool. I dunno if SVT Focuses have the 'bro' reputation of other American performance compacts (SRT4 and SS Cobalt), but I'm not gonna be the one to start it.

Nope, West Lafayette, Indiana, though I don't doubt there's at least a few cars exactly like it on every college campus.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:14 |
|
That is true. There is a Versa on campus that has the loudest exhaust in this state probably, it is ridiculous. Luckily he delivers pizza so I get to hear it often when I am on campus. BUT that still doesn't mean they don't amazing on the right sort of engine. I mean just look at the size of this one!!!
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:15 |

Hahaha, it is fun to be dick sometimes! But not to much because sometimes you become the dick

Purdue has a pretty big presence here on Oppo, maybe that's why: me, YSI and Bandit and a few others are all within a two-mile radius of each other. In truth I doubt it's any worse than any other college, though since we're highly ranked for the STEM majors we also get a bunch of foreign exchange students who mod the hell out of their GTR's and M3's.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:17 |

Straight pipes are the best pipes!!
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:19 |

Not to mention the diameter of the exhaust is like 1.5" and it ends up sounding like a kazoo.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:20 |
|
How long did it take you to find this?
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:24 |
|
I don't think so, it is usually just the SRT4 that I think of as the bro-mobile. I usually think of the Focus crew as people that like to autocross cause I see them there fairly often.
I usually try to keep it around 2000 rpms, the car doesn't like to go much lower than that though. I shift pretty early though like 2800 to 3000. So it doesn't make to much noise. Sometimes though, I have to give it some revs, like if I am out of gear and then the light turns green or something, then it becomes a bit louder.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:27 |

Ah dat dyslexia, H22A4. Engine in my 94 Prelude Si. And yeah they are, which is in principle why I find it silly.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:27 |

Seconds. I've seen it before haha. Never had a use for it until now. I couldn't stop laughing when I refound it.
"How'd that feel?"
"Good"
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:29 |

As long as it isn't obnoxious, catbacks make a car more fun to drive! That makes them useful. . . I guess.
I tried googling H24A2, and now I know why nothing came up!
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:32 |
|
I'm about the same. My car makes a ton of torque down low so I can shift at around 1800-2500 in town depending on gear to minimize the noise. Those Cobalts and the Versa and Hondas just annoy the crap out of me so I try to be quiet as I can around town, no need to show off or anything.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:36 |

To me a fartcan is something A) way louder than necessary B) disproportionate to the rest of the exhaust and C) tacky. For instance a big muffler on a turbo vehicle isn't necessarily a fartcan as it could be properly sized for the fact a turbo car doesn't need back pressure and may use extremely large pipe, where as it is a fartcan on a NA Civic.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:36 |

Im facing this delima right now. Sigh.
3.8 in my eclipse sounds good stock but damn if I dont want something different. Ive heard one with a fart can and one with a thrush welded on it. Both sound great! Fart cans CAN sound good as long as the motor is decent. 2.whatever liter? Nahhhhhh. Eco motor? Nahhhhhh. Wrist snapping monster? Maybe!
*Loose definition of the term "Monster" used.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:38 |

I usually just call canister mufflers fart cans. But I agree with the idea. Plus a super loud exhaust doesn't do much in the way of impressing people, usually just pisses them off.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:50 |
|
Generally speaking, a loud car doesn't impress anyone. Usually just ends up pissing them off. Although those Maseratis are pretty sexy.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 22:58 |

Agreed, the GTs are perfect examples of how good-sounding cars trump loud ones any day of the week. I see the blue MC Stradale drive past Physics almost every day and it sounds better at low revs than almost anything I've heard at WOT. Supposedly it sounds so good because the dude put a Larini exhaust on, but even the regular GT's make a great noise.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 23:08 |

They're useful if they make you happy. To be honest, I don't particularly care if people put those on since it makes THEM happy. Nor will I bash them, but I will roll my windows up or turn my music slightly louder to compensate. I do believe the best things are the ones that we want, not someone else. So for that reason I don't so much care what other people think of them, for the sake of being opinionated. In the other hand if it is constructive criticism or a "wake-up call", there's always ears for those.
And yeah, lol I felt like a bit of a tool when I read it and went like, wtf is that?
![]() 03/10/2014 at 23:17 |
|
Yeah... and I mostly hate it when people try to say they need it loud to make power. If that were true, Vipers would be shattering windows with how loud some of these Hondas "have to be" to make 130HP.

Is that the guy with the grey hatch? He was in one of my classes while I was there
![]() 03/10/2014 at 23:29 |

I haven't seen that one in a while. Hopefully he will be at the Purdue Car Show, and maybe he will give it some revs! There is an M3 at the apartments which is pretty loud, I love it!
![]() 03/10/2014 at 23:31 |

Yep, still ripping around campus at obscenely loud volumes. Was he as much of a tool as his car leads me to believe he is? He drives pretty aggressively too from what I've seen.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 23:40 |
|
Hilarious. Yeah - I even tried to make friends with the guy on a couple occasions to talk cars.
Also make sure not to call it a Yaris
![]() 03/10/2014 at 23:56 |

one of my favorite "That doesn't sound that cool...oh wait, nevermind" clips.
Also, i genuinely like the sound of this exhaust, but alas, i dont want my car to be loud.
![]() 03/10/2014 at 23:56 |

Oh, I'll be sure to ask all about his Yaris if I ever meet him. Dude drives by my apartment at least three times a week, I want some payback dammit, even if it is passive-aggressive trolling haha.

3.8l in an eclipse? Did the later ones have a V6? I say try and find a company that incorporates a canister in the design. They usually sound pretty good. I personally would go for headers that vastly improves the sound and the performance!
![]() 03/11/2014 at 02:50 |
|
I say get some longtube headers. They will make your car sound like a beast! Then again, headers can be a bit of a hassle, but SO worth it!
![]() 03/11/2014 at 19:51 |

Yea the third gen had a 3.0 v6 and the fourth gen(mine) has a 3.8 v6. Theres not many choices other than a megan racing OEM spec exhuast for $250+ or the high end for $700+ I would love to get headers but to be honest putting headers on a fwd v6 is so discouraging lol.

Update: No summer, no tourists so far. No terrorizing.
